Designing a visualization tool for children to reflect on their collaborative dialogue

Collaborative learning is an essential part of children’s development, positively impacting academic achievement and fostering higher levels reasoning. However, young learners often face challenges with taking turns in conversation, openly listening to ideas, respecting different viewpoints. One way foster collaborative skills may be raise awareness their own dialogue. In this paper, we present a new interactive visualization application that supports children reflecting on dialogue from recent prior interaction. The tool analyzes completed then presents temporal information about interaction partner. We implemented two studies 36 seventh grade who collaboratively computing activities. conducted think-aloud sessions investigate perceptions, preferences, expectations the visualizations. results showed visualizations hold promise for helping increase set goals regarding ways they would like improve.
